Time for my first tag! These questions were created by The Bibliophile Girl, and I first saw it on Audra’s Book Blabbing. I have added a few of my own questions to better represent my own reading habits!
Book or E-reader?
These days I read most books on my Kindle mainly because it’s much easier to carry around in my handbag so I always have a book with me. I still read paperbacks but less often these days, although I have to admit I can’t bring myself to donate my 2 book cases of books to charity as I do occasionally re-read them! I also use the Kindle App on my iPad but this is mainly for books with pictures such as the Hummingbird Bakery cookery books!
Kindle, Kobo, Nook or iPad?
Kindle and iPad are my technology choices for reading.
Do you buy books or borrow from a library or friends?
All 3 – I buy books that I know I will use to refer back to or I will read more than once. I borrow books from friends and the library where it’s something I want to read but I am not sure enough about it to buy it. If I can not find a book I want to read in the library I will borrow it from friends or buy it.
I have before now borrowed a book and after reading it I have purchased it. I have also been lucky enough to get some ARC copies and free books.
Do you buy new books or second hand books?
I have bought both new books and second hand books, when I look for books online I will always look to see if there is a good condition second hand copy available.
Audiobooks or books?
I prefer to actually read a book than listen to an audio book.
Do you have a certain place at home for reading?
I read in the lounge, conservatory or in bed. I have also been known to read in the tub, but I have not done so as much since I started reading on my Kindle just in case I drop in!
Bookmark or random piece of paper?
Both! I have a lots of book marks, including papyrus ones from Egypt a brass one with a book and my initials engraved on it and a fantasy hologram one, but if I can’t find one I will also use things like a train ticket, a piece of loo roll or kitchen towel or a receipt.
Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/a certain amount of pages?
I usually try to read to the end of a chapter before putting a book down, but when reading at night it sometimes doesn’t work out that way as once I start reading the same page more than twice I know it’s time to give up!
Do you eat or drink whilst reading?
I often read whilst having a brew but the only time I read and eat is when I read in work whilst on my lunch break!
Multitasking: Music or T.V. whilst reading?
I don’t mind background noise as I sometimes read whilst my husband is watching sport and I can zone out the noise as I get so absorbed in what I am reading it always amazes my husband that I have the ability to do this. I do the same in work or when reading by the pool on holiday as there is lots going on around me, but I can absorb myself so much in the book that I am not aware of any of it. Although I can do this, I do prefer a silent room to read.
One book at a time or several?
I have been known to start reading something and then find something I want to read so much that I can’t wait to finish the other book, so I will just read the book I want to read more and then when I finish it I go back to the book I had started to read. I can’t concentrate on two different stories so I can only read one book at a time.
Reading at home or everywhere?
You have probably already gathered I read in many places, including at home, at work on my lunch break, on holiday in the room and by the pool, on planes and trains and even sitting in doctors and hospital waiting rooms! Reading time is precious so you have to grab it when you can. 💞📚
Read out loud or silently in your head?
I hate reading out loud, I read silently in my head.
Do you read ahead or skip pages?
Never! I read every page and absorb each one before before I move on.
Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?
I try to keep books like new but with paperbacks it’s not always possible as if the book is quite thick then it’s sometimes inevitable that the spine may break. Thankfully I don’t have this issue with the kindle books! 😉
Do you write in your books?
I usually put this book belongs to along with my name and telephone number, but nothing else. I do this so that if I loan a book to someone they know who’s book it is.
Do you keep your Books or pass them on when you have read them?
I have certain Authors whose books I keep, these include Jackie Collins, Jilly Cooper, Patricia Cornwall, Lynda La Plant and Susan Lewis. I have some other random books that I won’t part with such as the Twilight saga books, The Flowers in the Attic series and The Stand (uncut version) by Stephen King. There have been other books I have given to charity or taken to hospital book shops for patients to read.
Do you read the back page before finishing the book?
Never! This is something I have never ever done and I don’t intend to start doing it now! It’s the wanting to know what happens that propels me forward when I am reading a book and I like the anticipation which makes some books un put down-able!
How do you find out about new books?
In many ways such as word mouth recommendations, adverts in magazines or stations, shopping centres etc. I receive recommendation emails from Amazon, good reads, bookbub which are based on the genres I like and books I have purchased in the past. Where I like a specific author I always keep a check on their website or on social media to discover any new books they are launching.
I have also discovered books by watching films or tv shows then discover they are based on a book so I will look up the books details and often read the book which is usually much better than any tv show or film. Stephen King’s The Stand was one of these finds and more recently Deborah Harkness’s the Discovery of Witches is another excellent find.
Who is your favourite Author or Authors?
I have a few which include Susan Lewis, Patricia Cornwell, Jackie Collins, Jilly Cooper, Jill Mansell, Lynda La Plant, Colleen Charles and I would say Deborah Harkness is rapidly becoming a favourite. I have just realised whilst writing this that all my favourite authors are female, so I think I need to find a favourite male author or two!!
What is your favourite genre or genres?
I would say my favourite genres are fantasy, crime, thriller, romance and contemporary romance.
