A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

THE NUMBER ONE INTERNATIONAL AND SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER.

A Discovery of Witches is the first in the must-have, must-read ALL SOULS trilogy.

It begins with absence and desire. It begins with blood and fear. It begins with a discovery of witches.

Fall under the spell of Diana and Matthew in the stunning first volume of the No.1 internationally bestselling ALL SOULS trilogy.

A world of witches, daemons and vampires.

A manuscript which holds the secrets of their past and the key to their future.

Diana and Matthew – the forbidden love at the heart of it.

When historian Diana Bishop opens an alchemical manuscript in the Bodleian Library, it’s an unwelcome intrusion of magic into her carefully ordered life. Though Diana is a witch of impeccable lineage, the violent death of her parents while she was still a child convinced her that human fear is more potent than any witchcraft. Now Diana has unwittingly exposed herself to a world she’s kept at bay for years; one of powerful witches, creative, destructive daemons and long-lived vampires.

Sensing the significance of Diana’s discovery, the creatures gather in Oxford, among them the enigmatic Matthew Clairmont, a vampire genticist.

Diana is inexplicably drawn to Matthew and, in a shadowy world of half-truths and old enmities, ties herself to him without fully understanding the ancient line they are crossing. As they begin to unlock the secrets of the manuscript and their feelings for each other deepen, so the fragile balance of peace unravels…

My Thoughts/Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What can I say other than Wow!

So I only discovered this book because on seeing the adverts for the Sky TV series based on this book I decided to look the book up, I noted it was part of a trilogy which was on offer for 99p on Amazon so I decided to give it a go, well I haven’t stopped reading since, I have read at every opportunity including taking my kindle to work so I can read in my lunch hour.

This book is the best supernatural series I have read since Twilight. Right from the beginning your under the books spell. It tells the story of Diana Bishop one of the few remaining Bishop witches, but Diana is not interested in witchcraft and she’s made a conscious effort to avoid it as she’s gone through life as she blames witchcraft for the death of her parents. Her Aunt is constantly going on at her to embrace her craft, but still Diana has ignored it.

Whilst doing research at the Bodleian Library Diana requests a book Ashmole 782 and when she opens it at first it won’t open but without realising it Diana uses her magic, she notes what information she requires but feels to scared to read any further. But just by opening the book Diana has set off a chain of events she knows nothing about, that is until she meets 1500 year old vampire Matthew De Claremont.

In fact Diana has attracted witches, deamons and vampires alike as they have all heard of the existence of this mysterious book that holds vital information about their beings but it’s been missing forever so everyone thought it was just a tale.

I don’t want to put too much more information into this review as I don’t want to spoil the story for those who want to read it!

The book is well written and there’s plenty of historical information in it leaving you in no doubt that writer Deborah Harkness is a superb historian.

I’m now reading the 2nd book Shadow of Night which I will review once I have finished it, but I cannot recommend this series enough it’s absolutely awesome!
